Start with Ledger — set up your hardware wallet in minutes
Ledger hardware wallets keep your private keys offline and under your control. This guide walks you through unboxing, initialization, backup, and best security practices so you can confidently store, send, and receive crypto assets.
Quick setup — 6 simple steps
- Unbox & inspect: Verify the tamper-evident seal and packaging. Only proceed if packaging is intact.
- Power on & install: Power your device and follow on-screen prompts. Install the official companion app (Ledger Live) on your computer or mobile device from a trusted source.
- Create a new wallet: Choose “Create a new device”. You will be shown a 24-word recovery phrase — write it down exactly and keep it offline.
- Confirm your recovery phrase: The device will ask you to confirm words in random order. This verifies your backup was recorded correctly.
- Install apps and accounts: Use Ledger Live to install coin-specific apps on your device and add accounts to start receiving assets.
- Secure and update: Set a strong PIN, store your recovery sheet in a safe location, and keep firmware & software up to date.
Why a hardware wallet?
A
Cold storage
Private keys are generated and stored offline — immune to remote hacks and phishing that target software wallets.
B
Device verification
Confirm each transaction on the device screen so attackers cannot silently modify operations.
C
Recovery protection
24-word recovery phrase provides a robust backup — keep it offline and secret.
D
Multi-asset support
Manage many blockchains through Ledger Live and community integrations.
Security best practices
- Never share your 24-word recovery phrase. Ledger will never ask for it.
- Buy devices only from official sources or authorized resellers to avoid tampering risks.
- Use a PIN and enable passphrase features if you need plausible deniability or additional account separation.
- Store backups in multiple secure locations (fireproof safe, safety deposit box), not on cloud or photos.
- Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated; follow official release notes before applying updates.
